Introduction to the job

ASML’s Development & Engineering (D&E) sector is responsible for the specification, design and integration of the ASML machines. In this sector, the cluster of Machine Conditioning (MC) is responsible for the fluid and vacuum systems. The cluster consists of different departments and groups, together covering the architecture, functional breakdown & design, specification, hardware design & creation, the integration and maintenance of water, gas and vacuum systems to control temperature and particles.

In the position of Module Architect Infra, you are responsible for the conceptualization, specification,  functional integration and life cycle management of fluid infra modules. You are the technical lead for an important part of the Flow & Thermal architecture of ASML’s lithography tools!

Role and responsibilities

The work consists of a translation of the thermal and flow requirements of the machine into a module architecture with a functional breakdown, set specification for the hardware design and manage the integration.

You communicate, negotiate, elicit and compromise with all the users on budgets, volumes and interfaces. This includes performance breakdown of flow, pressure and temperature, but also costing, reliability, manufacturability, cycle time and serviceability.

Together with functional architects and analysts you define functional behavior and control with electronics and software architects. You are also responsible for a safe design, meeting international standards and transportability (handling, transport and packaging).

Another main part of the work is to bring the system into operation with all functionality. With verification and qualification tests you prove that the module works as intended during the specification phase. And if there is an issue with the module in the factory or at the customer, you are the first point of contact over the lifetime of the module.

The Infra Module Architect reports to the Group Leader as well as to the Project Leader(s). We might work in a (scaled) agile environment as well with stable teams. She or he maintains regular alignment with stakeholders and defines a building block roadmap for her / his modules. Development team size varies depending on complexity and project phase, a substantial part may be at a design and/or hardware suppliers.

Main responsibilities

  • Understand the function of the fluid media at the end users inside the lithography tool

  • Make a functional breakdown of all specifications, interfaces, disciplines and create functional solution concepts

  • Perform analyses and calculations to predict the functionality of the module architecture (pressure drop budgeting, flow budgeting, humidification, gas purity)

  • Where necessary increase competence by literature research, experimental testing or supervision of external research partners

  • Negotiate, define, document and present the functional and design specifications of the fluid module

  • Create functional block diagrams and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)

  • Write functional behavioral speciation as input for software

  • Review proposed hardware solutions with internal or external designers by joining FMEAs, design reviews, verify component and material choices etc.

  • Cooperate closely with hardware suppliers on quality, risk management and project progress

  • Take care of the functional and hardware integration of the module: prove, document and present its proper functioning with offline and machine tests

  • Troubleshoot issues related to the module

  • Optimize commonality of the module at all levels, maximize re-use opportunities, minimize energy consumption and environmental footprint

  • Balance the fit of the module for use in different machine platforms / types

  • Create building block roadmap of (comparable) module(s) showing ownership on all aspects of the module over its lifetime

  • Delegate these activities and specialist work to others

  • Collaborate in project teams with colleagues of other disciplines

Education and experience

Technical BSc or MSc (preferred) Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering or a closely related field of study.

  • Solid theoretical and practical experience with heat and mass transfer phenomena and applications

  • Affinity with the hardware solutions

Skills

Working at the cutting edge of tech, you’ll always have new challenges and new problems to solve – and working together is the only way do that. You won’t work in a silo. Instead, you’ll be part of a creative, dynamic work environment where you’ll collaborate with supportive col-leagues. There is always space for creative and unique points of view. You’ll have the flexibility and trust to choose how best to tackle tasks and solve problems.

  • Highly motivated team player with excellent social, coordination and communication skills

  • Able to perform in highly dynamic environment

  • Ability to organize work effectively and having a systematic approach in problem solving

  • Ability to provide technical direction, motivate and convince a team of professionals

  • Pragmatic and result-oriented attitude

  • Strategic view on commonality

  • Strong stakeholder management to bridge contradicting requirements and priorities over different platforms

  • Good command of the English language (both written and verbal)

Other information

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
